Vases of roses, orchids, and other spring flowers set the mood for the year’s final meeting of Lodi Garden Club. Installation of officers, presentation of awards and a potluck luncheon also marked the event.

Jeanette Moore was installed as president for a second year. Betty Pfeifle will serve a third term as vice president, with Gordon Schmierer as understudy so he can assume the post later. Esther Kreth, Carol Marvel and Suzanne Benbrook will continue as treasurer, parliamentarian and membership secretary, respectively. Rose Hayles will be the new recording secretary. Former president Alice Reimche was the installing officer.

There were a number of awards and recognitions. President Moore was presented with her first term President’s Book, compiled by Diane Burkett. Nancy Gillaspy was recognized for her creative work in many projects, and for putting out the annual yearbook for several years. Next year’s book will include members’ pictures.

Vern Weigum, local nurseryman, was recognized with an award given by California Garden Clubs, Inc. to nurseries who work with and help local garden clubs. Weigum, who has donated plants and given advice to the club, is already an honorary member.

Husband and wife teams Betty and Ramer Pfeifle and Aiko and Kaz Hayashi were recognized for their help with outreach projects such as pruning roses and the maintenance of the gardens at the entrance to Lodi Lake, respectively.

Announcements included thanks from Tree Lodi for a generous donation to the DeBenedetti Park project; the addition of eight new members this past year (Peter Burkett is the newest); and the news that the March Annual Game Day realized a profit of $2,558, most of which will go towards scholarships to district high school students interested in going into ecology, agriculture and other related areas.

Dues, delinquent by May 1, must be paid by June 1 for members to be included in the yearbook. A table setting show will be held in October to raise funds for a Blue Star Memorial marker to be placed in Cherokee Memorial Cemetery.
