The Lodi Branch of the American Association of University Women held its Nov. 13 meeting, which focused on its Legal Advocacy Fund. Beginning with a holiday boutique, and followed by a soup/salad supper, both fundraisers raised money for LAF.

AAUW, through its Legal Advocacy Fund, is helping fund a lawsuit known as Cioca et al. v. Rumsfeld et al. Kori Cioca was raped while on duty in the military by a fellow member of the service. No prosecution of the perpetrator occurred.

Sixteen other women and men stepped forward to join in the lawsuit with similar complaints of rape, sexual assault and sexual harassment while in the military.

The November program provided a preview of the film “The Invisible War,” which tells the story of Kori Cioca and other women and men in the lawsuit. Shockingly, their stories elicited hundreds of similar stories of rape and sexual harassment with no consequences for any other than the victims, who were further harassed after reporting the incidents.

This film won the Audience Award at the January 2012 Sundance Film Festival. AAUW will show the film in its entirety sometime in the future.

The next meeting will be held on Jan. 15, 2013 at 6:30 p.m. at the United Christian Congregational Church and will feature Dr. Caroline Cox, who will talk about the discovery of insulin. The public is invited. Contact Margie Paulsen at 209-334-4443 about the program, or Sharon Ceresa at 209-481-3007 regarding membership.
