This year, Lodi Garden Club was pleased to be able to present three $500 scholarships, one to a senior from each of Lodi School District’s three high schools: Lodi, Tokay, and Bear Creek.
Elizabeth Diekman, daughter of David Diekman of Lodi and Tamara Renaud of Stockton and granddaughter of Ruth Diekman, ranks 34th out of the senior class of 463 at Lodi High School. She plans to attend California Polytechnic Institute, studying viticulture with the ultimate goal of being a wine maker. She comes of a deep agricultural heritage, as her great-grandfather, Herman Diekman, was long the agriculture teacher and FFA advisor at Lodi High.
Emily Schneider, daughter of Eric and Stephanie Schneider of Lodi, is graduating from Tokay High and going on to California State University, Fresno, next fall. Her studies will encompass all the areas she will need to know to become an agriculture teacher. Her particular interests lie in horticulture, crops science, conservation, and forestry.
Winning the first scholarship the club has given to a Bear Creek High School student, Nathan Morrison, son of Bryant Morrison, of Stockton, will be attending California State University, Monterey Bay. He will be studying environmental sciences, and hopes to become a botanist. He was able to stay for the balance of the club meeting — and promptly joined the growing male membership of the club!
