The Lodi Amateur Wine Makers (LAVA) announces a competition for home winemakers. The competition, called The Bottle Shock Open, is accepting entries now through July 15th.

"We have a very active club with the expertise and manpower to put on a first class event," explained LAVA President John Bischoff.

According to “Pooch” Pucilowski, The focus will be on education. Judges will be brought in that can give useful feedback to the wine makers. Local wineries and businesses, including the Lodi Grape Festival, are providing support and financial sponsorship of the various classes so that the ribbons, medals and awards will be especially handsome.

"This is our first year, but we are committed to an annual Bottle Shock Open, drawing entries nationally and internationally," said Aaron Kidder, home wine maker turned professional, and owner of the Kidder Family Winery in Lockeford.

Judging will take place Aug. 1, and winning bottles and awards will be on display at the Grape Festival in September. Entry information and sponsorship opportunities are accessible on the website at Membership and meeting information for LAVA is on the club website
