American Association of University Women Co-President Pat Stump is a Master Gardener, in addition to all her many other accomplishments which include painting beautiful watercolors, playing the harpsichord, and birding the world including the Pribilof Islands with David Sibley. Larry Stump, her husband, describes himself as a “tag along” to Pat, although he is a pediatrician and avid gardener. They presented the AAUW April program which featured their adventures in gardening.

The program started with the question: How do you know when to plant tomatoes? The answer was that you go into the backyard, look to see if the neighbors are watching and if not, drop your pants, then sit in the ground. If the ground is cold on the buttocks, wait a few weeks. That story was attributed to Vern Weigum. Pat Stump talked about the importance of good compost and provided a recipe for making compost. Larry Stump gave gardening tips such as that they start tomatoes in January. He also read about starting plants in sacks on the patio and gardening in straw bales (not hay). Larry Stump watches close-out sales and buys half-price bulbs which did very well when planted in December and January. He talked about the many varieties of fruit and vegetables he grows. His eastside garden contains 30 peach trees, three varieties of apricots, five varieties of pluot, eight varieties of apples and so forth. When asked if there was anything they didn’t grow, Pat Stump responded, “Marijuana.”

AAUW will hold its Installation Dinner at the Woodbridge Country Club on May 21 at 6 p.m. Cost will be $25 at the door. Membership dues are also due that night. Make reservations by contacting Margie Paulsen at 209-334 4443 or Nanette Green at 209-367 4238. For membership information, contact Sharon Ceresa at 209-481-3007.
