On April 13, the Lodi Elks Lodge No. 1900 honored all the volunteers and officers who worked throughout the year on projects to enhance the local community. An appreciation dinner was provided by the Elks and hosted by Mike Dugan, outgoing Exalted Ruler. Award presentations were given and one member, Mary Avanti, stood out as the Citizen of the Year. Among the many projects she has been involved in were:

  • Organizing with Joaquin County to get a safe walk way on Lilac Street between Indiana and Carolina, a cross walk painted on Carolina Street, as well as expanding the shoulder of the road five feet, with a white paint strip, so children and others may walk safely to school.
  • Worked with San Joaquin County to complete phase one of the re-development project of the curbs, sidewalk and gutters in Woodbridge.
  • Started the Woodbridge Food Commodity Program which feeds 24 families every month in Woodbridge, most of them being seniors.
  • Worked with San Joaquin County Parks and Recreation to get one more park bench and barbecue pit placed in Woodbridge Community Park.
  • Spearheaded, along with Mary Fuhs, the Woodbridge Wilderness Area opening two weekends a month throughout the year, as well as every weekend from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Helps Mary Fuhs organize volunteers to maintain that area, which has saved the county over $24,000 this year alone.
  • Assisted with the Whistle Blower program at the Woodbridge Sanitary District to help bring accountability and fiscal responsibility to the plant.
  • Organizes the Neighborhood Watch Program in Woodbridge and works closely with the Sheriff Department and others to keep gangs out of Woodbridge and reduce criminal activity.
  • This citizen’s home is used as a collection center for recycled furniture and other goods to give to those in need.
  • Started a community service hours program in Woodbridge which partners high school students with the Sheriff Department. Thus the students in need of community service hours can do them in Woodbridge, benefiting our local community.
  • Working with San Joaquin County to bring a book mobile to Woodbridge.
  • Initiating a local sports program for the youth of Woodbridge community.
  • Boy Scout Committee Chair for the Elks. She has re-established the Elks relationship with the Boy Scouts to promote the greater good of all.
  • This member is working on getting a movie night in the park program as a way to bring the community together.
