Dr. Floyd Zastrow, a Lodi optometrist, was presented with a Helen Keller Fellowship at recent Lodi Lions Club fund raising dinner. The Helen Keller Fellowship, presented through the Lions Eye Foundation of Northern California and Nevada, was awarded to Dr. Zastrow for his enduring commitment in assuring that the underprivileged in our community are provided with necessary vision related services. Zastrow has been a practicing optometrist for 61 years and has been a member of the Lodi Lions Club for 53 years.

The Helen Keller Fellowship is named after Helen Adams Keller, an American author, political activist and lecturer, probably best known for being the first deaf/blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree. In 1925, Helen Keller addressed the Lions Club International Convention, challenging the Lions to become “knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness.” Since then, Lions have worked tirelessly to aid the blind and visually impaired.

The Lions Eye Foundation of Northern California and Nevada, works in partnership with California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco in a common mission: “To preserve and restore the gift of sight by providing free ophthalmic examinations, operations and medication to the less fortunate of our community.”

Formed in 1917, Lions Clubs International is the world’s largest service club organization with more than 1.35 million members in approximately 46,000 clubs in more than 206 countries and geographical areas around the world. Lions Clubs are a group of men and women who are committed to community service, focusing on services for the visually impaired and needy.

The Lodi Lions Club meets every Wednesday at noon at Burgundy Hall at the Grape Festival Grounds. For more information or to get involved with the Lodi Lions Club, contact Rich Shook at 209-334-0663, and or visit the website at
