Car catches fire on Highway 99

The remains of a charred Chevrolet sedan rests on the shoulder of northbound Highway 99 after a vehicle fire Tuesday afternoon in Lodi. Emergency crews responded to the scene after receiving reports of a vehicle crash and grass fire, said Capt. Ron Penix of the Lodi Fire Department. However, emergency crews realized it was a single-vehicle incident upon reaching the scene, he said. No one was injured in the incident and the driver of the sedan was not present at the scene. The fire apparently started when the car broke down, exited the roadway and an overheating catalytic converter sparked the dry grass, said Officer Keith Sweeney of the California Highway Patrol. The vehicle was not stolen, police said.
