A hair-raising science lesson

Buy this photo

With one hand on a Van de Graaff generator and the other reaching out to shock classmates, Olivia Serratos’ hair defies gravity as static electricity courses through her body at Beckman Elementary School on Thursday, March 7, 2013. More than just eyebrows were raised as students learned about electricity, light and sound using hands-on, interactive experiments in the National Science Center and United States Army’s Mobile Discovery Center. The science-filled semi-truck, which is free to the schools it stops at, travels the country to promote science to students from fourth to ninth grades.
