Firefighters train teachers

Buy this photo

Firefighter Brent Gerlack of the Mokelumne Rural Fire District teaches Darlene Alden how to properly apply two electrical pads from an automated external defibrillator while Maria Teran looks on at Victor Elementary School on Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013. Because the school is so isolated and it takes emergency workers longer to respond to a call, the San Joaquin County branch of the American Medical Response organization donated one AED — worth about $2,000 — to the campus. Ten teachers were trained in how to use the device. Once the machine is turned on, an automated voice walks the user through the process. It sends a jolt of electricity to the heart if the machine detects a specific irregular rhythm indicating a sudden heart attack had occurred. The devices are common in schools, airports, malls and other crowded places.
