A community-led effort to re-open school libraries in the Galt Joint Union Elementary School District has already collected more than $13,000.
When school begins Monday, the school libraries will be closed due to budget cuts.
But Superintendent Karen Schauer said the Re-Open School Libraries fundraising efforts led by chairwoman Leesa Klotz made significant progress in generating resources to re-open the libraries.
While it takes $104,000 to open the libraries for the entire school year, the district can open the libraries at every school for six weeks at a time for $16,000, according to Schauer.
To date, the committee has raised $13,506.
