Actor Will Smith has been tapped to play Dr. Bennet Omalu in “Game Brain,” a movie about the man who discovered a brain disease caused by repeated head trauma in football players.

Omalu, a forensic pathologist, lives in Lodi and is the San Joaquin County Medical Examiner. The PBS documentary “League of Denial” examined Omalu’s findings and the NFL’s initial rejection of them. A lawsuit between 4,500 former football players and the NFL would later come to a settlement, with the league neither admitting nor denying the players’ injuries were caused by football.
