A Lodi woman who drove her car into a moving train with her young daughter in the back seat in 2011 was found guilty of attempted murder and child endangerment last week.
Christine Leach, 45, has moved between San Joaquin County Jail and a state hospital several times since being arrested in Oct. 2011.
Leach had been stopped in her white Chevrolet Malibu behind several vehicles that were going west on Pine Street at the railroad tracks in downtown Lodi. According to witnesses, Leach pulled out of the line of cars, stepped on the gas and drove her Malibu west in the eastbound lane, accelerating into the train.
Leach didn’t sustain any injuries. However, her 5-year-old daughter was airlifted to UC Davis Medical Center.
Leach underwent several months of treatment at Napa State Hospital until a judge ruled her competent enough to stand trial.
On Thursday, after a seven-day trial, a San Joaquin County jury found Leach guilty of attempted murder and child endangerment.
On Jan. 7, a new trial will begin to determine whether Leach was insane at the time of the crash.
