Volunteers — including a couple of celebrities — served 630 scoops of ice cream Saturday as part of the ongoing fundraising efforts to keep Galt Joint Union Elementary School District libraries open.
The Re-Open Galt School Libraries group raised more than $2,500 at Velvet Grill and Creamery, and only has $2,480 remaining to meet the goal to keep libraries open through the end of the school year. At that time, federal grant funding will kick in for the next three years.
Hello Kitty volunteered her paws, while Sabrina Rodriguez from the FOX 40 morning show helped scoop special "Big Red Couch Crunch" ice cream for two hours, according to organizer Leesa Klotz.
"It has been quite a journey this year. Our original goal — to reopen our school libraries — was $106,000, and now we are almost there for the nearly 4,000 Galt elementary school students," Klotz wrote in an email.
To help reach the final goal, donations are being accepted through the group's PayPal account on the Galt Joint Union Elementary School District website at www.galt.k12. ca.us. Click on the green heart-shaped "donate" button.
