A 33-year-old Lodi man died Wednesday morning after being impaled by a metal bar that sliced through his windshield while driving along Interstate 580 in Livermore.
Michael Cox, who recently moved from Rocklin to Lodi, died of multiple blunt injuries, according to the Alameda County Coroners Officer.
Officers responded to a 2003 Volvo sedan partially in the center divide and dirt embankment along I-580 near Grantline Road, according to California Highway Patrol. Inside the vehicle officers found that Cox had been struck in the head and upper body by a four-foot metal bar, likely used to secure loads on the back of flatbed trailers, which flew through his windshield, according to CHP.
Cox was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police believe Cox was killed by the pole and not the subsequent crash.
CHP is looking for any witnesses, who are asked to call the Dublin CHP office at 925-828-0466.
