Due to expectations of heavy rain this weekend, surges of water are being released from Camanche Reservoir into the Mokelumne River.
East Bay Municipal Utility District, the agency that operates Camanche, is conducting water releases to free up storage space in the reservoir in anticipation of the rain, said Charles Hardy, an EBMUD spokesman.
The releases began Friday morning and will continue throughout the early afternoon. Rates of water being released from Camanche will increase from 2,400 cubic feet per second to more than 3,000 cfs during that time.
