Some Downtown Lodi merchants say they don’t use the Downtown parking structure because they don’t feel safe there.

Ramona Henninger, an employee at Sheri’s Sonshine & Nutrition, located at 6 N. School St., said she hasn’t parked in the garage since about 2007.

Sadly, but not all that surprisingly the only times I've found the garage at all useful was when a special event was going such as the bi-annual Street Faire. Other than events such as those, I have rarely had a problem parking on School Street - regardless of the time of day. In fact, I have never had to circle the block even once searching for a place to park my vehicle.

I wonder how they ever came to the conclusion that such an investment should have been made in the first place. Other than a few specialty shops and a movie theater (currently infiltrated with bed bugs, of all things), there's really not that much to encourage anyone - locals or "tourists - to shop in Lodi, California. Sure, it could have been the recession that has lasted far longer than anyone could have imagined. But hasn't California bounced back from that debacle? That's the general consensus I believe - or maybe not. As for the bed bugs - is this a first for any Central Valley Movie Multiplex? I guess if it's going to happen, it'll happen here!! (Hey, if we don't keep our senses of humour, we might ALL go nuts!!)

Thankfully there's the World of Wonders occupying most of the space that I believed they hoped would be used by other shops and/or eateries for all to enjoy. One thing is certain, in no way could the failures of Downtown Lodi be blamed on the planned and passed Wal-Mart Super Center. Maybe, just maybe it could be blamed on George W. Bush. Why not? Or is it now the little critters?

Wasn't the real given purpose for the parking structure to accommodate the thousands of tourists that were supposed to come to Lodi and to handle the enormous crowds of people coming to Lodi on the new Amtrak stop? That's what was pitched to us from your local good ol' boys at city council at that time?
