The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office has identified the body found Monday in the Woodbridge Irrigation Canal as Wilfrido Alvarez, 26, of Lodi.
Police believe Alvarez crashed his car into the canal on Sunday morning. A cause of death has not yet been determined.
Authorities responded on Sunday to a call that a GMC pickup had struck a pole along a dirt road on a vineyard north of Turner Road, according to the California Highway Patrol. CHP arrived around 8:30 a.m. and found the pickup partially submerged in the canal with no driver inside. The crash was originally treated as a hit-and-run, according to the CHP.
About a quarter-mile downstream from the crash, a man who was taking his dog swimming saw the body floating face up in the canal along Devries Road north of Turner Road.
Sheriff’s deputies and Woodbridge firefighters removed the body from the canal, which is roughly nine feet deep and runs through a rural farmland area in Lodi east of Interstate 5.
