Rep. Ami Bera, D-Elk Grove, whose district includes Herald, voted against a bill that he describes as extreme, partisan legislation” that would ban all abortions after 20 weeks.

House Resolution 1797 contains limited exceptions for victims of rape and incest to receive abortions at 20 weeks and poses additional obstacles to women in need of safe and legal abortions, Bera said in a news release.

“This bill takes away the core American value of individual freedom, by prohibiting women from making choices about their own bodies and putting that decision into the hands of politicians,” Bera said.

“As a doctor, I took an oath to give my patients the best options available to them and to let them make the decision that best fits their faith, family and personal circumstances,” he said. “The government has no place in the exam room.”

“Instead of rolling back women’s rights, we should be trying to keep them healthy, and working to prevent unplanned pregnancies,” he added.
