Creekside Elementary School will once again get an up-close-and-personal look at the American nationalization process.
Hann Soy, the elementary school's community liason, will be sworn in as a U.S. citizen on Friday morning. The school's principal, Louise Roachford-Gould, had her own swearing in last September.
Soy came from Cambodia as a 17-year-old refugee in 1985, a survivor of the Killing Fields of the Khmer Rouge. He enrolled at Tokay High School before learning any English. Though he experienced bullying and other abuse, he is known for his optimism.
Nearly 700 students will witness the ceremony. Susan Curda, director of District 22, Sacramento, will swear in Soy after the music class sings the National Anthem. Other student will post ceremonial colors. Later, Curda will host an immigration quiz with the assembled students.
