The owner and safety coordinator of a farm labor contractor were arraigned Tuesday on involuntary manslaughter charges in connection with a 17-year-old Lodi girl's heat stroke death.

Maria De Los Angeles Colunga, owner of now-defunct Merced Farm Labor, spoke little during the short Stockton court appearance. She stood beside her brother, Elias Armenta, as their attorneys discussed future court dates.

With all the law suits being filed, it`s a wonder anyone would want to farm in San Joaquin County. As Dirty Harry once said, " A man, or in this case a girl has to know their limitations". She is at least 50% responable, her boy friend and uncle another 25% each. To think the owner oversees all the employees all the time is rediculas. If 911 were called instead, perhaps she would be alive today. Trimming vines is not rocket science, and the workers are always moving, difficult at best to provide shade or a rest room break which might mean walking a great distance. Concerning water, BYOW.
