Lodi High School’s unflappable Pingpong Club hopes to be a hit next year

1. It's been an official Olympic sport since 1988. Athletes from China have won more than 40 medals in the sport.
2. It was originally played among the British upper class as a parlor game in the 1880s. It was called wiff waff.
3. Ryuta Joraku holds the world record for the most pingpong balls caught with chopsticks in one minute. He caught 21.
4. To win, a player must earn 11 points, or 12 if the game is tied 10 to 10.
5. Table tennis was banned from the Soviet Union from 1930 to 1950 on the grounds that playing it was harmful to the eyes.

Freshman Tyler McMullen, 16, smacked a pingpong ball against the exterior wall of the Lodi High School library on Thursday. Around him, members of the Pingpong Club practiced against the door to the north gym, and on the rickety, slightly broken pingpong table.
It's a small, hodgepodge group. Pingpong didn't quite catch on this year.
