Loren Herzog's last words to his family were scribbled on a note that was left on a table in his trailer prior to his apparent suicide Monday night.
The note simply read "Tell my family I love them," according to a press release by the Lassen County Sheriff's Office.
The press release also stated that Herzog apparently hung himself by tying what appeared to be a bed sheet around his neck, attaching the makeshift noose to a ladder that was leaning against the back of Herzog's trailer on the grounds at High Desert State Prison, where he resided following his release from prison in September 2010.
According to the press release, Lassen County deputies interviewed employees from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation that were on scene when Herzog was found.
The employees said Herzog was hanging by the rope material that was attached to the ladder when he was found.
The press release states that the employees retrieved a knife and cut the rope material that Herzog was hanging from. On-duty medical personnel were called to the scene, where they eventually declared Herzog dead around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, the press release adds.
