The San Joaquin County Sheriff ’s Office has launched an investigation after a 43-year-old inmate was found dead in his cell Monday afternoon.
Correctional officers found Noel Valencia unresponsive in his single-person cell at San Joaquin County Jail around 12:30 p.m., according to Deputy Les Garcia, spokesman for the Sheriff ’s Office.
Officers performed life-saving measures until emergency medical personnel arrived. However, paramedics pronounced Valencia dead at the scene.
The San Joaquin County Sheriff ’s Office has launched a “protocol” investigation, which, according to Garcia, is standard procedure when investigating the circumstances surrounding an in-custody death.
Stockton police arrested Valencia on Thursday on suspicion of felony drug charges, according to the jail records.
A cause of death is pending an autopsy and toxicology results, which could take up to six weeks to complete.
