George Barber, who served as a San Joaquin County supervisor for 24 years, dies at 75
George Barber stands on his property near the Mokelumne River on his ranch in 2006. Barber, who died Friday, April 30, 2011, was concerned that Sacramento County was looking to connect a sewer pipeline from Walnut Grove to Elk Grove.

I met George a few years ago. He hosted my friend's wedding. He was such a kind, generous man. I spent hours listening to him share the history of his homeplace and of the county. After just a few hours I considered him a friend. He will be missed.

From Rich Hanner: Having covered the controversial chapter in Mr. Barber's career, I discussed it with Ross and suggested it be included low in the story, which he did. I personally liked and respected Mr. Barber, but that incident and surrounding controversy was part of the record of his tenure with the county. I noted The Record also alluded to it in its story. It is a classic damned-if-you, damned-if-you-don't situation. In my view, Ross did a good job handling a sensitive feature obituary. Not easily done.

Why should Lodi taxpayers tolerate a $400 per month vehicle stipend and literally pay for public servants to use any of that for personal use of their own vehicle. They should be allowed a per diem per mile for business only or use a city owned vehicle to complete any city related business only. There is nothing but waste that can, and should be, cutback on not only vehicle expense, but lodging at reasonable hostels, with bar tabs and spa treatments excluded, meals at inexpensive, yet reputable eateries.

It should be noted that Supervisor Barber was not termed out. He had the opportunity to run for one more term, but chose to retire.
(Once term limits were enacted, Board Members were allowed to run for 2 more full terms).

Only the Lodi News-Sentinel would be so vindictive. Why don't they report on the current and past city credit and debit card usage of public servants and their abuse of the system at local hotels, spas, restaurants, events, etc?
