The K-9 unit of the Lodi Police Department has had a busy week. After one police dog trapped a suspect in a bush on Tuesday, Officer Ryan LaRue and his police dog partner, Kael, were able to snag a parolee at large early Thursday morning.
Austin Reed, 28, was on parole for assault with a deadly weapon and was found to be violating his parole, according to Sgt. Mike Oden. A warrant was issued for his arrest.
Officers knocked on the door of his Church Street apartment at 1:30 a.m. Instead of coming out, police said Reed climbed out of a second-story bathroom window.
Officers were waiting for him beyond an iron fence near the apartment, but they said Reed ran in the other direction. That put him right in the path of police dog Kael. According to police, Reed quickly turned and attempted to scale the fence, but Kael nipped at Reed's pant leg, and Reed fell into the arms of waiting Officer Nick Welton and Sgt. Eric Versteeg.
Reed is in custody in the Lodi jail awaiting charges of resisting arrest and violating his parole.
