Greer Elementary School will be hosting a rummage sale this Saturday on campus to raise funds to help reopen the Galt Joint Union Elementary School District’s libraries. They were shuttered at the beginning of the school year due to budget cuts.

Donations of items will be accepted until 4 p.m. Friday in the Greer office, 248 W. A St. For additional information, email wecansavethelibraries@hotmail.com. Additionally, local businesses are donating new bicycles and food gift certificates for raffle prizes.

School board president John Gordon pointed out this is another effort where the community at large will be pulling together as one, as opposed to six individual school sites.

Valley Oaks Grange will be hosting a spaghetti feed on Oct. 5 to help reopen the libraries. All proceeds will go toward that effort.

A 5K community run/walk sponsored by New Hope Church is also in the works, as is a holiday faire in December, according to Superintendent Karen Schauer.

“We have a very positive momentum to reopen our school libraries through a variety of fund raising and donations efforts,” she said. “I am grateful to our parent leaders, employees and community in helping us make this progress.”
