Authorities are investigating the killing of a 36-year-old man who was shot on his family’s property in Acampo while possibly confronting a trespasser, according to the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office.
About 3:40 a.m. Friday, deputies arrived at a home on the 11000 block of East Peltier Road and found Kristopher Hoyt suffering from a gunshot wound. Hoyt was transported to a local hospital where he later died, according to Deputy Les Garcia, spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators learned that Hoyt may have been shot during a confrontation with a trespasser on the property, Garcia said.
One neighbor, who spoke with Hoyt’s father following the incident, told the Lodi News-Sentinel that after the shooting, the suspect climbed into a nearby car and fled the scene.
Other neighbors said they heard a loud argument coming from the home around 1:30 a.m. Later Friday morning, they heard two gunshots, they said.
“I heard a lot of screaming and then later on, gunshots,” said one neighbor. “It seemed like two seconds later I heard sirens.” The neighbors did not wish to be named.
Hoyt lived with his father at the Acampo home, neighbors said.
As of Friday afternoon, investigators were still on the scene in the rural area of Acampo, searching the yard in front of the home as well as a nearby field.
