November 2001: China joins World Trade
Organization. The move expands the nation's trade influence as
American corporations flock to capitalize on its colossal workforce
and minimal regulations.
October 2007: Pat Patrick and Frank Gayaldo
represent the Lodi Chamber of Commerce with several board members
May 2008: Pat Patrick, President and CEO of the
Lodi Chamber of Commerce and Mark Chandler, executive director of
the Lodi Winegrape Commission, travel to China to market Lodi.
August 2008: Gao Zhansheng, Consul General of
the People's Republic of China, visits Lodi and samples area
January 2010: The Lodi Chamber of Commerce
opens the Lodi Chamber China Trade Desk in Shanghai in January
2010. The desk offers information about the region and products it
produces, including wine, cherries and almonds.
October 2010: Mark Chandler, executive director
of the Lodi Winegrape Commission, attends the 2010 World Expo in
Shanghai. Six Lodi wineries were the only United States
representatives at the international wine show.
May 2011: Importers from Chengdu and Shenyang
visit Lodi and are taken on tours of area wineries by the Lodi
Winegrape Commission. "The most important thing is to highlight, at
least from a marketing perspective, is to show these visitors all
the cherries, almonds and Zinfandels they enjoy all come from the
same place," said Patrick.

Thanks to a blossoming middle class with expendable income and a
preference for California wines, Lodi appellation vintners are
starting to cash in on China. The interest is so strong that the
owner of one Linden winery is even considering selling his vineyard
to Chinese investors.
"I'm looking to retire, and I'd say that the offers I'm getting
— 5-to-1 — are from Chinese investors," said Dave Pechan, owner of
Miramont Estate Vineyards. "The Chinese government is providing
financing to help investors buy these places. They want Chinese
