Three Toronto Zoo elephants are expected to be moved to the Performing Animal Welfare Society sanctuary by the end of next month.
The Toronto Zoo is reportedly urging the public to see the elephants — Toka, Thika and Iringa — beforehand, as Zoocheck Canada claims the permits are in place and a plan has been made to move them, according to a Canadian newspaper.
Officials in the Canadian city won’t divulge the exact date of the elephants’ departure, only saying it will be sometime after Thanksgiving. The elephants will be transported in trucks.
The move comes after the Toronto City Council there approved the move two years ago this month.
But the move was delayed on several occasions, as clashes took place over where the elephants should go, concerns about their future welfare at the sanctuary, and how they should be transported.
