Mick Founts, San Joaquin County’s Superintendent of Schools, has announced his bid for re-election in 2014.
Founts has worked at the county Office of Education since 1991. He started the first community school in the county, where now more than 1,500 at-risk students work to overcome obstacles leading to a high school diploma. He says he also co-founded one of the first public charter schools, Venture Academy Family of Schools.
Founts began his teaching career as an English teacher and coach at Manteca High School in 1976. He was also a career counselor, supervisor of child welfare and attendance at Lodi Unified School District, head football coach at Manteca High and assistant football coach at San Joaquin Delta College.
His wife Kristin is a special education teacher at Tracy High. They have two daughters.
