SANTA CLARA — The father and sister of Cyndi Vanderheiden vilified convicted murderer Wesley Howard Shermantine Jr., on Wednesday, while people testifying on Shermantine’s behalf described him as a reliable construction worker who studied the Bible in jail.
Shermantine, 35, of Linden, was convicted Feb. 14 of murdering Vanderheiden, 25, of Clements and three others during a 14-year period. A six-man, six-woman Santa Clara County jail is listening to testimony this week to determine whether Shermantine should receive the death penalty or life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
