A Lodi man is in jail after he was accused of beating his grandfather Wednesday afternoon.

Lodi officers arrived on the 0 block of North Corinth Avenue, where an 89-year-old man suffered several abrasions to his arms and leg and a laceration to his right eye, according to Lodi Police Lt. David Griffin.

Police say Joseph Schmidt, 33, confronted his grandfather in the driveway of their home. They were arguing because the grandfather was upset that Schmidt wasn’t looking for work, Griffin said.

According to officers, Schmidt then punched his grandfather, knocking him to the ground, Griffin said. Police say Schmidt proceeded to kick his grandfather three times in the head. The grandfather reported losing consciousness during the assault, Griffin said.

Schmidt then walked away from the house and the grandfather called the police.

Lodi police arrested Schmidt nearby. The grandfather is being treated in Lodi Memorial Hospital. Schmidt is being held in San Joaquin County Jail on suspicion of elder abuse, with bail set at $100,000.

He is set to appear in San Joaquin County Superior Court on Friday.
