Debra Hackett, 53, of Galt, is in critical condition at UC Davis Medical Center after being involved in an accident on Highway 12 late Monday afternoon.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident occurred at 4:40 p.m. when a big-rig slowed too quickly and jack-knifed, striking a bus being driven by Hackett in the opposite lane. There were no passengers on the bus at the time of the crash, said Officer Angel Arceo, a CHP spokesman.
The driver of the big-rig, Elaine McDonald, was also critically injured and was airlifted to John Muir Hospital. McDonald, 59, is in stable but serious condition.
A third vehicle, a Chevrolet Blazer, swerved to miss the accident and went into a ditch on the side of the road. The driver, an unidentified 28-year-old male, was uninjured.
Traffic on Highway 12 was shut down in both directions following the crash and did not reopen until 7:47 p.m., Arceo said.
