Lodi police screened 766 vehicles during Saturday night’s DUI/driver’s license checkpoint, but there were no arrests.

However, 14 drivers were cited for driving an unlicensed vehicle, and three others were cited for driving with a suspended or revoked license, according to Lodi police Sgt. Shad Canestrino. One vehicle was towed away.

The checkpoint was held from 7 p.m. Saturday to 12:30 a.m. Sunday in the 200 block of East Kettleman Lane.

Checkpoints are placed in locations that have the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence and provide the greatest safety for officers and the public, Canestrino said.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, checkpoints have provided the most effective documented results of any of the DUI enforcement strategies while also yielding a cost savings of $6 for every $1 spent, he added.

What a waste of taxpayers' funds, 0 Dui's and 17 minor traffic offenses, again entrapping motorists, mostly minorities, to line the coffers of the wealthy tow and impound yard owners and not tend to their real business of impaired driving. If they would place all of these law enforcement personnel in their patrol cars or unmarked cars and patrol the immediate downtown area, where all the bars, restaurant/bars and overly saturated amount of wine tasting rooms are located, they would be able to issue all of the impaired driving tickets they wanted. But it seems that they are afraid to arrest or cite any vocals are good old boys for fear of losing their jobs. Between the terrible placement and evenings chosen for these checkpoints and a lousy job done on the gang enforcement programs Lodi City police department seems to waste more money than any other department in the city Lodi. Why is that?
