While driving around town this month, you may notice Lodi firefighters steering their trucks in bright pink shirts instead of their usual blue uniforms.
The fashion statement is one of several ways the Lodi Professional Firefighters Association is raising funds for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation during Pink October.
For the second year, the firefighters are sporting the pink shirts, and they also designed a new shirt for the public. It references Pink October, Lodi Firefighters and has the word "CURE" on the back in the same shape of the LOVE Park statue in Philadelphia.
Mayor JoAnne Mounce gave a proclamation to Brad Doell, the firefighter union's president, at Wednesday's Lodi City Council meeting.
Mounce thanked the firefighters for their efforts to raise money and inform the public.
The Pink October campaign is personal for the department, Doell said, because Fire Chief Larry Rooney's wife Joni and Capt. Michael VanGuilder's wife Allison were both recently diagnosed with breast cancer.
Last year, through all of the fundraising efforts, the department was able to donate $5,000.
"I'm proud to say the Breast Cancer Research Foundation gives 90 cents of every dollar to cancer research or treatment," Doell said.
Want to help out? You can purchase a pink T-shirt for $12 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. at any of the Lodi fire stations and at the department's administration building at 25 E. Pine St. T-shirts will also be for sale at the Lodi Street Faire on Oct. 7.
Station locations are 210 W. Elm St., 705 E. Lodi Ave., 2141 S. Ham Lane and 180 N. Lower Sacramento Road.
The firefighters will also have two giveback night at Chili's Grill & Bar, 2745 W. Kettleman Lane. Firefighters will be at the restaurant on Oct. 17 and 24 to collect donations, and servers will be wearing the pink shirts.
Chili's will also donate 15 percent of meal purchases to the nonprofit when customers bring in a flyer for the giveback day. Flyers will be available on the "Lodi Professional Firefighters" Facebook page or at Station 1 at 210 W. Elm St.
