'Parade of Lights' tonight

With a theme of "Christmas Around the World," the 10th annual Parade of Lights kicks off tonight at 6:17, following the lighting of the city's Christmas tree in front of Lodi City Hall at 5:30 p.m.

More than 90 entries adorned with lights will be in the parade, including floats by Coca-Cola and Safeway. John and Gail Kautz will serve as grand marshals.

The parade starts at Hutchins and Pine streets, travels east on Pine to Church Street, south on Church to Lodi Avenue, east on Lodi Avenue to School Street, north on School to Locust Street, and west on Locust to Hutchins.

Rain is forecast tonight, but organizers say the parade will proceed as planned.

Free parking is available in the parking structure on Sacramento and Elm streets in downtown.

GrapeLine bus service will be available from Tokay High School on West Century Boulevard, First Baptist Church on North Mills Avenue, Temple Baptist Church on Lower Sacramento Road and the National Guard Armory parking lot at Washington and Lockeford streets.

An area reserved for seniors and disabled attendees will be in the parking lot of St. Anne's Church, at the corner of Church and Walnut streets.

Cars will need to be removed from the parade route by 3:30 p.m., though the Church Street and Lodi Avenue portions of the route will stay open until 6 p.m., Lodi police said. Vehicles left on the parade route will be towed.

Portions of Hutchins Street near Hutchins Street Square will be closed to traffic starting at 4 p.m. Police encourage motorists to avoid that area.

Assistant city manager to be hired

A full-time assistant city manager, expanded from the position's current part-time status, could be hired in January or February, Galt Human Resources Director Paula Islas said.

For several years, Curt Campion has assumed the shared duties of planning director and assistant city manager, but the City Council voted earlier this year to create two positions instead of one. Campion recently informed the City Council he would rather have the planning director's position full time.

Applications for the full-time assistant city manager position were accepted the entire month of November, Islas said.

A screening panel not involved with the city of Galt will screen applicants. City Manager Ted Anderson will interview finalists and recommend one or two people to the City Council.

The City Council might discuss the finalists in closed session on Jan. 17 and possibly make a selection that night, Islas said. The new assistant city manager may begin his or her duties in March.
