California Highway Patrol officers are investigating the circumstances that led a 21-year-old woman to jump or fall from a pickup truck to her death along Highway 99 late Wednesday night.

A woman who was riding in the bed of a Ford pickup tried to climb over the tailgate, possibly unaware the vehicle was driving south along Highway 99 around 11:11 p.m., according to CHP Officer Dan Sepulveda.

The woman fell to the road and was struck by a Honda Civic. She was pronounced dead at the scene, Sepulveda said.

The female driver of the pickup did not stop after the collision, but was contacted by police officers at a home in Clovis around 4:30 a.m., Sepulveda said.

She told officers she was unaware a woman was in the bed of her truck, or that she had fallen onto the roadway. Sepulveda said it doesn’t appear the driver knew the victim.

Authorities haven’t released the victim’s identity, but are continuing to investigate the incident.

“It’s kind of a weird situation,” Sepulveda said.
