A man whose assault rifle and collection of drugs was found by Lodi police during a city wide sweep of parole and probation violators was arrested early Thursday after police initially did not find him at home.

Samuel Clayton Laing, 26, was arrested at his residence on the 1400 block of West Vine Street early Thursday after police had initially not been able to meet with him when they came to his home Wednesday as part of a multi-agency probation and parole sweep.

Lodi police officers asked to speak with Laing, but his roomate told them he was currently not at home, Officer Mike Mantzouranis said.

However, the roommate invited police in to the residence to still conduct a search.

During that search, Mantzouranis said, law enforcement officers found inside a baseball bag in Laing's room that contained an assault rifle, ammunition, cocaine, prescription pills, marijuana and a switch blade.

Laing had been on probation for a DUI arrest, Mantzouranis said.

Officers confiscated the items and headed back to the home early Thursday, and Laing was arrested.

Laing faces charges of possession of a controlled substance, illegal possession of an assault weapon, selling or transferring a switchblade knife and possession of marijuana.

He was booked at the Lodi jail, where he is currently in custody.

Laing is being held on $13,000 bail. A court date has yet to be set.

Should graduations return to the Grape Bowl?

Lodi Unified leaders are moving Lodi and Tokay high school graduations from the Grape Bowl to the Spanos Center at UOP in Stockton. They cite limited seating, costs and unpredictable weather at the Grape Bowl. But others say graduations at the Grape Bowl are an important Lodi tradition, and one reason many supported renovating the stadium. What do you think?
