Arraignment is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon for the woman arrested by Galt police last week on suspicion of attempted murder. Dwanda Mahoney, a 30-year-old transient from Galt, is suspected of giving birth to a baby girl Tuesday, Nov. 26, and leaving her in a flower bed.
The baby survived and was taken to a local hospital for treatment of hypothermia. Her condition was unavailable this morning, but she was reported to be in fair condition.
At first, Mahoney denied being pregnant or having given birth to the infant, officers said.
She was taken to the hospital for treatment, then arrested and booked into Sacramento County Jail on Wednesday morning.
Police received the 911 call around 5:20 a.m. about a newborn found crying in front of a residence in the 500 block of B Street. Upon arrival, officers said they found a woman on the front porch of the residence and later determined she had given birth to the baby, according to police.
They believe the infant would not have survived if the 911 call had been made any later.
Mahoney was arrested and charged with a misdemeanor earlier this year for alleged possession of less than an ounce of marijuana, but did not appear for several courts beginning in May. She will likely be arraigned on those charges, as well, at her arraignment at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in a Sacramento courthouse.
She is being held on no bail.
