The Galt Police Department has moved two of its current officers into the K9 division. Officers Nathan Meyerdick and Dan Carter will replace slain Officer Kevin Tonn and Officer Brian Nino, who has taken a job with the Monterey Police Department after eight years in Galt. His last day is May 12.
Nino's dog, Bo, suffered a career-ending injury last month that required surgery. He was released from the animal hospital this week and will live with Nino.
"I want to thank all of you for all your support, verbal and monetary," Nino posted on the Galt K9 Facebook page Thursday. "You have made it much easier to push through the tough times Galt has gone through over the years as a K9 program and as a department."
The department still has not replaced its two police dogs. Tonn's dog, Yaro, was retired when his handler was killed in the line of duty January. The dog currently lives with Tonn's family.
Before his death, Tonn was already working to raise funds to replace an aging Bo. Those efforts have continued by the Foothills K9 Association.
