As a way to support troops overseas, veterans will donate artwork to be auctioned off at the Veterans Summer Art Auction on Saturday.
Lodi Support Our Troops is holding the event to raise funds to send boxes over to the troops who are serving in the Middle East.
Marcia Dempsey, of Lodi Support Our Troops, said it is a different kind of fundraising event for the nonprofit that will benefit not only those currently serving in the military, but the veterans as well.
“They are veterans. They have done so much for our country. Some of them probably don’t have an outlet to sell their paintings and this flows into what we’re doing,” she said.
Julie McKinley, wine events coordinator for Lodi Support Our Troops, was trying to think of other ways to raise money to send boxes to the troops over the holidays. She decided to organize the event after bringing art from artists at the Livermore Veterans Administration Medical Center to the First Friday Art Hop.
“I thought, ‘Why not do it at a winery, with artwork that is donated by military veterans?’” she said.
Ten artists will be featured, who will donate various works of art including colored pencil sketches, watercolors, acrylics, abstract photography and oils.
Lodi Support Our Troop’s goal is to send 2,000 boxes to the troops during the holidays. McKlinley said they are hoping to raise $20,000 in cash to cover the cost of postage for those boxes.
The event will include winetasting, a raffle, a silent art and gift basket auction, and appetizers donated by various local businesses including Lockeford Meats, DeGrande’s Cafe and Cheese Central. There will also be live entertainment by Little Square Box.
The event will be held from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at Klinker Brick Winery, 15887 N. Alpine Road. Tickets are $20 per person. To purchase tickets, call Julie McKinley at 224-1225 or Julie Miller at 327-2048.
