The San Joaquin County Coroner’s Office has identified the woman who died after she stepped or fell out of the bed of a pickup and was struck by a vehicle on Highway 99 Wednesday night.
The victim has been identified as Gabriell Marie Johnson, 21, of El Dorado Hills.
Johnson apparently tried to climb out of the bed of a pickup, and was possibly unaware the vehicle was driving south along Highway 99 around 11 p.m., according to California Highway Patrol. Johnson fell to the pavement and was struck by a Honda Accord. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators are still unsure how Johnson ended up in the bed of the truck.
The female driver of the pickup was driving from Sacramento to Clovis. When officers contacted her in Clovis hours after the incident, she said she didn’t know anyone was in the bed of her pickup, adding that she didn’t know the victim.
