The city of Lodi is debating whether to open the area north of Awani Drive as a public access point to the Mokelumne River. Currently, homeless people stay in the area and many other people use the private access point as a route to swim in the river.

Donald Beighey, a homeless man who lives in the area north of Awani Drive on the Mokelumne River, thinks the area should be open to the public.

Lodi officials are considering making a canoe and kayak launch out of 3 acres of unused city property located at the north end of Awani Drive.
