Mayor Joanne Mounce
"I know there have been several businesses that have been concerned about Stockton's bankruptcy, and that might actually help Lodi because they may move to our community as a result.
"But you never want to see communities like Stockton go bankrupt because there may be effects that we might be completely unaware of at this time. We might not have contemplated about what that could do to Lodi or retirees or employees of Stockton who happen to live in Lodi."
Councilman Bob Johnson
"I'm hopeful it will not have any effect on us. Apparently, Manual Lopez, the county administrator, indicated in the past week that the bonding agencies, like Fitch and Moody, may be looking over their shoulder.
"Our rating have been very, very strong lately and have increased in the electrical and water front. We are in pretty good shape.
"It would have some type of impact, but it's hard to put a finger on it."
Councilman Alan Nakanishi
"Stockton's bankruptcy should not affect Lodi. We didn't venture out into redevelopment. We didn't borrow money to do development that we can't pay for.
"I feel sorry for Stockton, but as far as Lodi is concerned, we are in difficult straits, but we are not in a position to go into bankruptcy."
Councilman Larry Hansen
"At first glance, I don't see how it could really affect Lodi. There really is no direct nexus financially from the city of Stockton and the city of Lodi. The slowdown in the economy, the screeching halt of homes, has stopped the surge from the city of Stockton toward Lodi. I've seen that kind of impact.
"You hate to see any city have to go through that, because it undermines the good things they are trying to do."

Stockton's potential bankruptcy would likely have little direct effect on Lodi, but it could shine a negative spotlight on the county, city leaders say.
Stockton is currently in confidential mediation with its major creditors, including its unions and retirees. The process is a state-mandated step before the city can file for bankruptcy.
