During the July 4 holiday, hundreds of boaters and fishermen will celebrate on the San Joaquin County waterways.

The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Boating Safety Unit is taking a proactive approach to help save lives by promoting the essentials of boating safety and wearing life jackets.

Injuries and fatalities can be avoided by simply wearing a life jacket.

Just in the past two weeks alone, in separate incidents, four fishermen drowned in San Joaquin County waterways while fishing and not wearing life jackets.

“Wearing a life jacket is the most important step boaters and fishermen can take to ensure their safety on the water,” said Sergeant Carey Pehl of the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Boating Safety Unit.
