Hay bales, ponies, clowns and puppies were just a few of the attractions that brought crowds to Locust Street on Saturday. It was the site of the second annual Reading Roundup, hosted by the Lodi News-Sentinel and the Lodi Public Library.

Event coordinator Peter Breech said attendance was up, and more vendors were involved in this second year.

“I want the kids to have fun, and for the parents to see the importance of education, and how it will help their kids later in life,” he said.

Local educators, health advocates and hands on science groups set up booths with kid sized activities like bubbles, face painting, games, and chances to win books. Locust Street was closed to traffic between Church Street and Pleasant Avenue.

New this year was the Sentinel Saloon, where Faith Community Church’s youth group sold hot dogs and snacks, and A&W Root Beer sold sodas and floats and will donate the proceeds to the library.

St. Peter’s Church set up a mini petting zoo where children interacted with miniature horses. Micke’s Grove Zoo had animal skulls and pelts for a hands on exhibit.

The entertainment was rounded out with a show by Sparkles and Ravioli the clowns and reading by two local children’s book authors Lori Mortensen and Odie Dentone.
