It's been years, maybe decades, but the Galt City Council chambers are about to get a makeover.

What: Council chamber improvements will include removing wood paneling and repainting outdated walls.

Work will also tentatively include installing new trim, molding, dais top, paint and other aesthetic improvements, according to City Manager Jason Behrmann.

Where: The city council chambers are located within City Hall at 380 Civic Drive.

Who: City staff met with three local contractors to discuss proposed improvements.

When: Construction work is expected to take place in May. It will be scheduled between city council meeting dates.

Proposals for a new sound system upgrade in the council chambers will be accepted by the city through May 9.

Why: The city is seeking to improve the overall audio experience for both participants in the room as well as on the TV and live Internet feeds, to foster clear communications for transparency and better understanding of all proceedings, according to the request for proposals.

The city is also seeking to improve functional control of the audio and projection systems. Much of the sound and projection equipment used in the chambers is located in unsightly areas, is aging and is in need of upgrade or replacement, according to staff.

How: The work is being funded by $50,000 in Public, Educational and Government fees from the Metro Cable Commission.
