More than twice as many applications than spots available were received for the 60 McCaffrey Middle School morning bus route spaces.
In June, the Galt Joint Union Elementary School District board of trustees voted to reduce school bus transportation services to rural routes only, due to the continuing budget crisis and lack of state resources to fully fund the 2011-12 school bus routes.
A lottery, based on the number of empty seats after rural elementary students are dropped off on the west side, determined which students would still receive morning-only transportation.
Bus passes will be mailed home for those selected through the lottery process. School starts Monday.
The students not selected will be placed on a waiting list. Parents are encouraged to either arrange car pools with other families or register for afterschool program participation based on available space.
