On Wednesday, hundreds of seniors from across San Joaquin County attended Senior Awareness Day at Micke Grove Park in Lodi. The event is held annually on the last Thursday in May and celebrates Older Americans Month.
The event welcomed seniors and their family members and caregivers as they learned about programs and resources that support seniors in the area.
More than 130 companies were there with stocked booths as they shared information about health maintenance organizations and Medicare, nursing and home care, cremation and funeral services, as well as legal advice. Some sponsors include Health Plan of San Joaquin, Home Instead Senior Care, San Joaquin RTF, Anthem Blue Cross, the Arbor, Scan Health Plan, Arbor Place Assisted Living, Hospice of San Joaquin, Fashion Safari, Rocky Mountain Chocolate, Olive Heaven and Perfect Balance Day Spa.
Belinda Guzman, administrator for Arbor Place Assisted Living in Lodi, says it was a busy morning that started at 8 a.m. and ended around 1 p.m. All of their goodies, including bags of popcorn, were wiped out early.
“We had 500 bags and we ran out by 10 in the morning,” she said.
A senior art show, classic car show, Bingo and visit from the Sheriff’s guide and therapy dogs were also highlights of the day. There was also live country music that Guzman said she could hear across the park.
With a free shuttle service from Weberstown Mall in Stockton, more seniors were able to attend this year’s event.
